For decades now, in space advocacy circles, there’s been a running joke: “How do we make porn in space?”
It’s not prurience, it’s economics. What made VCRs and DVD players popular, and spawned the whole cassette/disk rental industry — which eventually included Netflix? Sure, Disney movies played their part, but the real bucks were in adult videos.
What turned the Internet from a nerds’ electronic fanzine network into the bedrock of our modern society? Sure, online banking was a thing, but that came after millions were online, and they were online because of porn. (They also demanded secure payment applications to buy their online porn.)
Hence the joke. Space enthusiasts are always looking for the economic “killer app” which will make space profitable. The tobacco for our new Jamestown, if you will. Porn did it for DVDs and the Web, how can we use the awesome power of masturbation to take mankind to the stars?
Well, now we have the answer. Two elements have come together:
- Orbital data centers, and
- AI-generated porn.
The AI porn will make the orbital data centers profitable. The demand for orbital data centers will drive cheap, reliable space transport. We’ve got our space porn.
Next stop, Mars!
