Found Art

I went on a walk Saturday afternoon, on the banks of the Connecticut River in Turner’s Falls. I’ve never been down there before, and it came as a wonderful surprise. The abandoned factories along the river have crumbled, and the fallen stones and bricks have turned into a kind of post-industrial mosaic. Changes in the level of the river as the nearby dam lets down water casts clumps of bleached driftwood onto the bank in amazing patterns — as if you gave Andy Goldsworthy an infinite budget, decades of time, and the power of a river.

The stone terrace walls supporting the old factories have been eroded and hollowed in places, creating odd little grottoes.

I know my taste for this kind of thing is distinctly idiosyncratic. Probably very few people would have been delighted to find a bunch of water-rounded bricks and driftwood along a river, but if you are one of them, I hope you enjoy these images.

I’m always interested in hearing from my readers, and I’d love to see some active discussion. Comment now!
